Oversized Avatar Images

Hi everyone,

Would any of you that are having a problem with hugely too big avatar pictures in the posts, PLEASE let me know who you are and what browser you use to view PRL? For those of you who don't know what browser you are using, please tell me what it says in the extreme upper left of the PRL view. It should say something like "Project radiant Light - Microsoft Internet Explorer" or  "Project radiant Light - Mozilla Firefox". Additionally, you can click "Help" in the tool bar below that area, and then click "About", and tell me not only the browser name, but the version as well, which would be REALLY helpful in finding a universal solution for this. The problem is "autoscaling" of the images. If it autoscales properly, then people that are using larger than the normal avatar size get thiers re-scaled and all is well. The problem happens when they are NOT being resized, and as some of you noticed, some people here use VERY large images for avatars, so it ends up covering up more than it should.

Anyway, please, all of you that are having problems with this, let me know, and I'll see what I can do about it.

Thanks and have a wonderful day!

Love and light,

Rick

He finished the dregs of the brandy and threw the empty flask to the ground with all his might. The flask bounced, flashing in the sun, and rolled away. He forgot about it immediately. He sat there, covering his eyes with his hands, and he was trying — not to understand, not to think, but merely to see something of how things should be, but all he saw were the faces, faces, faces, and more faces... and greenbacks, bottles, bundles of rags that were once people, and columns of figures. He knew that it all had to be destroyed, and he wanted to destroy it, but he guessed that if it all disappeared there would be nothing left but the flat, bare earth. His frustration and despair made him want to lean back against the ball. He got up, automatically brushed off his pants, and started down into the quarry.

The sun was broiling hot, red spots floated before his eyes, the air was quivering on the floor of the quarry, and in the shimmer it seemed that the ball was dancing in place like a buoy on the waves. He went past the bucket, superstitiously picking up his feet higher and making sure not to step on the splotches. And then, sinking into the rubble, he dragged himself across the quarry to the dancing, winking ball. He was covered with sweat and panting from the heat, and at the same time, a chill was running through him, he was shuddering, as if he had a bad hangover, and the sweet chalk dust gritted between his teeth. He had stopped trying to think. He just repeated his litany over and over: "I am an animal, you see that. I don't have the words, they didn't teach me the words. I don't know how to think, the bastards didn't let me learn how to think. But if you really are... all-powerful... all-knowing... then you figure it out! Look into my heart. I know that everything you need is in there. It has to be. I never sold my soul to anyone! It's mine, it's human! You take from me what it is I want... it just can't be that I would want something bad! Damn it all, I can't think of anything, except those words of his... I use internet explorer 8.  It varies who avator come out large. Mostly Viv, Katey, and Paula's I think!   There have been others, but I don't remember. Sometimes athey are large and I do mean large. Viv and Katey will cover the whole page and blot out all the writing. I have to click on as if I am replying to be able to read.  Sometimes they are normal, but there is usually at least one that is large each time.  I guess they are taking turns being large.  Smiley

It's true....guilty as charged. I have been known to use full sized images, since there was no listed cap here and the resizing worked so well and well......the sheer laziness. LOL

With any luck, my new pic should be small enough to not do that...or, rather, not be so large if/when it happens. Smiley

I use IE8 version number 8.0.6001.18702.
If I remember correctly, I had the problem before upgrading to IE8, as well.

Not to go around saying I'm like something so great and all that, but this gave me a little perspective on the difference between most forums and THIS forum. I figured maybe I could get a little insight into the core problem by doing a quick web search for "Yabb avatar size huge". This was the first hit I looked at:

http://www.forumsnet.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=news;action=display;num=112 6725347

The administrator of THAT forum came up with a very quick, almost surgical solution to excessively large avatar images - if you can't respect the loading times involved for ALL the other viewers of the pages that your massive avatar appears on, then your avatar will be removed.

Not that I would EVER do such a thing to the users of PRL, but there is a great deal of perspective to be gained from the whole issue and WHY it is an issue. To that end, I would humbly ask that those of you who are using very large images as avatars, and know how to resize them down to the displayed resolution, please do so. The forum will load quicker for everyone, and those who are having the "avatar overload" problems, simply won't have those problems anymore. To put it a bit bluntly, this is not so much an issue with the forum, as it is an issue of pushing the limits of the forum. You know me - I've always been one to push it and I've even encouraged users to help me do so. I DO intend to find a solution to this problem, but meantime it would be helpful if those of you who know how to do a simple resize and resave could do so. These are hard and busy times for me, and I'm doing all I can, but a lot is going on in my life right now and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. Just help where you can, and where you can't, grant me your patience, as always. Smiley

Will update where able on this issue. Love and light!!

When I used IE I had that problem from time to time, but it was intermittent at it's worst. Going to Firefox helped, but at rare times I would get it then too. But.....since updating to the latest Firefox, 3.5.3, (well actually the last TWO major updated versions) I never get the oversized avatars anymore.

I will say that there were a couple of times where I LOVED the oversized pictures, but I'll not elaborate on that...ha!

It was my opinion, when I first read of the recent avatar problems, that it was all individually browser related.
If it were up to me, I'd say everyone get the absolute latest version of their favorite browser. If it were even further up to me, I'd say everyone go get Firefox...hahaha. But to each their own.

Ha.....I just looked at all the Avatars on this page, and mine is the largest!!!  A whopping 33K!

Rick, is there a size to shoot for?

I cut mine down to around 21K.

Egad sorry I have taken so long to reply, Rob. I actually did reply once already but somehow it got lost. Things lately have been a bit crazy for me... I'm in process of negotiating a lease agreement for rental of a duplex (nice place, I'm pretty happy about it), and still have this persistant, nervewracking cough, and I've been very tired. Anyway... The issue isn't actually of kilobyte size so much, although sure that does play into the loading times part of it. Rather, the issue foremost at hand is of pixel dimensions. What happens is, for some browser setups, anything beyond 90x90 (the limits I have set in the forum setup) just keeps on going beyond it's little box instead of being automatically re-scaled for display. For those who do have this problem with their browser, they will ONLY see it on images that exceed the 90x90 pixel resolution limit, and that's why for now I humbly ask those of you who are using large images to please reduce them in scale, save them to a different filename if so desired, and use those resized images for your avatars. Not only will the forum pages load faster for everyone, those who are having a problem with a large avatar image now, won't have the problem with the resized avatar image in the future. This of course is a case by case solution and will not help with avatar images that are not being resized manually by their owners, but every little bit helps. Also, please note that I have taken a preliminary look at the page source for a typical thread, and I have discovered something in the generated page code that I may be able to exploit in order to completely eliminate the problem without further need for avatars to be resized manually by their owners. Large avatars will of course still slow down loading times, but it would be good to fix this problem in the coding particularly for avatar images that are only a bit above the 90x90 pixel resolution limit, which wouldn't take long to load anyway. More updates as I know more, and thanks again everyone for your patience. Smiley

Ah OK, gotcha... Wink !

I can finally use the pixel adjustment in Photoshop!!...haha.

Thanks for all your work, Rick. After all this time, you're still willing to work to keep this forum going. Says tons and tons about your character. You're a good man, Rick.
And I do hope you feel better. I've been feeling odd myself, though not really sick, just it's as if I'm addicted to sleep lately. You'd think 15 hours straight of sleep would be enough...but no.....

Anyway, thanks for the info on the Avatars. I hope everyone has a wonderful forum experience!!

p.s. let us know how the process is going on the duplex!!  I know this would be a huge plus for you, so I'm sending all good stuff for this to happen and happen soon! I only wish I lived closer, I'd come and help you move, I really would.

Ya know....I could do a road trip to Florida!!  Ha!!
